Quartz

Quartz (Silica SiO2) is the most common mineral in the Earths crust. Quartz is found in sandstones, pegmatites granites, and other igneous rocks. It forms veins in the cracks of rocks. There is a lot of heat and water where they form. Crystals are made when the quartz cools down. The way the crystal looks depends on how hot it was when it was formed. It can be found in layers or geodes, too. Geodes are hollow rocks that are lined with crystals. It has a hexagonal crystal structure and is made of trigonal crystallized silica. It is most varied in terms of varieties, colors and forms. Of all the minerals, quartz is closest to a pure chemical compound and has constant physical properties.

It is hard, chemically inert and has a high melting point, attributable to the strength of the bonds between the atoms and extremely resistant to weathering. These are prized qualities in applications like foundries and filtration systems. Quartz may be transparent to translucent and has a vitreous luster, hence it is used in glass and ceramics. Quartzs strength, silicon dioxide contribution and non-reactive properties make it an indispensable ingredient in the production of thousands of everyday products.

We supply Quartz in Lumps, grits/Sands and powder forms for various industrial applications:-

Quartz sand/grains in Glass Industry:-

Quartz is commonly known as silica sand for producing float glass, fiber glass, automotive glass, clear container glass, Borosil glass and other types. We produce quartz powder for high purity glass having extremely low levels of contaminating metal oxides, and other foreign particles with the help of heavy magnetic separators used in mesh 25 to 32 or in mm size 0.1mm-0.3mm, 0.3mm - 1.2mm, 0.5mm-0.1mm, 1.2mm - 0.3mm.

Fused Quartz (Silica glass), vitreous silica glass: silica (SiO2) is used for very special applications and has very low thermal expansion, is very hard and resists high temperatures (1000 1500 C). It is also the most resistant against weathering (alkali ions leaching out of the glass, while staining it). It is used for high temperature applications such as furnace tubes, melting crucibles, Flat glass, Automotive Glass Hollow Glass (e.g. Thermal expansion, hardness, specific gravity).

Ceramics Industry

It is used for fireproof ceramics, fine ceramics, tableware floor and wall tiles, sanitary ceramics, porcelain and glazes. In the CERAMIC body, silica is the skeletal structure upon which clays and flux components attach. The SiO2 contribution is used to modify thermal expansion, regulate drying and shrinkage, and improve structural integrity and appearance. Quartz powder is also used in ceramic tiles along with feldspar. The powder is available in semi and snow-white color, which has 90%+ whiteness that is considered A grade, and is mostly used by table ware manufacturer because of extra whiteness and non-contamination. However in ceramics, huge quantities of quartz powder are used in bodies and glazes. Usually 200, 300 325# meshes are used.

Paint industry

PAINT formulators select micron-sized industrial sands to improve the appearance and durability of architectural and industrial paint and coatings. High purity silica contributes critical performance properties such as brightness and reflectance, color consistency, and oil absorption. In architectural paints, silica fillers improve tint retention, durability, and resistance to dirt, mildew, cracking and weathering. Low oil absorption allows increased pigment loading for improved finish color. (Floor paints that will be subjected to abrasion may contain fine quartz sand as a filler). Not all paints include fillers. It can be used in mesh size (30, 40, 50, 60, 80, 100, 120, 150, 200, 250, 300, 350, 400).

Oil well drilling

In Oil well drilling industry, it is known as Silica flour. It is used for cementing purpose to inhibit strength retrogression at elevated temperatures. It can also contribute as a cement extender by increasing low shear viscosity and preventing cement sedimentation. The addition of silica flour can adjust the phase transformations and inhibit this strength reduction and the associated increase in permeability that occurs in set Portland cement.

Other Usages:-
  • Quartz sand is used as a filler in the manufacturing of rubber and putty.
  • High purity Quartz sand fused in for manufacturing Sodium silicate (Water glass), Silicon tetrachloride, and Ferro Silicon.
  • In foundry Refractory industry, used in the form of Silica ramming mass.
  • Electronics grade crystals can be used in filters, frequency control, timers, electronic circuits, semi conductors.
  • Optical-grade crystals are used as lenses and windows in lasers, also in various specialized devices.
  • Used as an abrasive in stonecutting sandblasting.
  • Water purifier
  • Linoleum flooring industry
  • Various hues and sizes of Quartz pebbles used for decorative purposes and Jewelry
