Bentonite deposits are normally exploited by quarrying. Extracted bentonite is distinctly solid, with the moisture content of approximately 30%. The material is initially crushed and, if necessary, activated with the addition of soda ash (Na2CO3). Bentonite is dried (air and/or forced drying) to reach a moisture content of approximately 15%. According to the final application, bentonite is either sieved (granular form) or milled (into powder and super fine powder form) or treated with acids to produce acid-activated bentonite (bleaching earths), or treated with organics to produce organoclays. The main constituent, which is the determinant factor in the clay's properties, is the clay mineral montmorillonite.
Bentonite is the active protective layer of geosynthetic clay liners. Bentonite has multi-properties including swelling, hydration, water absorption, viscosity, thixotropy, which makes it a multi-application product for diverse industries.
Based

Almost all iron, steel malleable iron casting foundries are using Bentonite for cost efficient results. Bentonite is utilized in foundry to bind the sand grains into desired shapes. Bentonite helps in retaining the mechanical shape of the mould by making the particles of sands adhere to it and also making the surface impermeable. Strength and fusion point are the two important properties desired for selecting bentonite. Primary use is in the production of non-ferrous castings. Mixing ratio depends on the sand fineness and its quality, impurities, clay particles and fineness of sand will affect the Green strength properties.
Bentonite clay is used in vertical drilling fluids to increase viscosity and filtration control. This mineral is also ideal in drilling fluids because it expands when exposed to water. This expansion helps down hole formations to be sealed from invading drilling fluids. The Drilling bentonite extracts the drill cuttings from around the drill bit, which are then floated to the surface. Bentonite also serves to cool and lubricate the drill bit as well as seals the drill hole against seepage and to prevent wall cave-ins. It is mainly use in fresh pure water rotary drilling conditions as water quality will affect bentonite performance. The quantity of bentonite used is variable depending upon the depth of the hole to be drilled. Generally one tonne of bentonite is used to prepare about 100 barrels of mud.
Bentonite in civil engineering applications is traditionally used as a thixotropic, support and lubricant agent in diaphragm walls and foundations, in tunneling, in horizontal directional drilling (HDD) and pipe jacking. Due to its viscosity and plasticity, is also used in Portland cement and mortars.
Our IOP grade bentonite is extraordinary solution for Iron Ore Pellet binding and it can also withstand higher temperature since it contains more percentages of metal. The grade is also having higher natural percentage of Iron which is ideal in isolating ore pellets with the maximum percentages of Iron. The Iron Ore Pelletization plant is able to maintain active clay levels with reduced additions of Bentonite. Since IOP grade bentonite is having high Mont values, it offers more superior thermal durability.
It is used as a bleaching agent, as an adsorbent in decolorizing and used for refining oils and fats. Fuller's earth is a mineral substance characterized by the property of absorbing basic colors and removing them from oils. In general Bleaching Earth is a decolorizing agent which will change the tint of any coloured oil to a lighter shade by changing the basic colour units in oil, without altering the chemical properties of the oil. Bleaching Earths are special clays activated by physical or chemical processes. Natural clays are found in special strata and are subjected to various processes such as desegregation in water, treatment by sulphuric acid solutions, filtration, baking, grinding, etc. The efficiency of bleaching earth depends on selecting the right grade and proper blends of the basic raw material Bentonite. The major uses of Fuller's Earth are for decolorizing petroleum oils, edible oil, vegetable oil, beer, the recycling of used lubricating (Engine) oil, fats, greases, paraffin waxes and solvents. It is also used in cosmetics, face pack, and for making masks.
Organoclays are manufactured by modifying bentonite with quaternary amines. We supply organoclay for various below mentioned usages:-
Paints, Coatings Cosmetics:- Due to its thixotropic properties, bentonite and organo clays function as a thickening and/or suspension agent in varnishes, and in water and solvent-based paints, cosmetics (toothpaste, antiperspirant cosmetic make-up, aerosols, body lotion, face packs, creams, shampoos hair grooming aids)products. Its adsorption properties are appreciated for the finishing of indigo dying cloth, and in dyes (lacquers for paints wallpapers).
Epoxies & Adhesives:- It is also used for epoxy and adhesives manufacturing due to its characteristics Viscosity control, particle supension, gel stability no effects on cure, assists in emulsion, stabilization of water / oil emulsions
Rubber Tyres:- Organocclay has found itself as an indispensable additive for quality tyre manufacturers. A very nominal addition of organoclay, eliminates the requirement of continuous stirring to prevent settling of solids, homogenizes the mixture to give a smooth spray able emulsion for effective mould release to the tyre. Besides ease of application, the addition of the clay minimizes tyre rejections and ensures a non - chatting, non - sticking smooth surface to the tyre innards.
Water Treatment:- OrganoClay is a modified clay mineral designed for use as a filter media in process and wastewater treatment. When used alone, OrganoClay removes oil at 700% the rate of activated carbon. When used as a pre-treatment for activated carbon in applications involving oil and grease removal, OrganoClay removes the oil and grease effectively, allowing the activated carbon to remove the soluble organic compounds more efficiently.
Bentonite has great water binding ability and consequently very law permeability to water. It has been found, that the permeability of the soil is reduced considerably when substituted by sodium bentonite. Hence, this material is often employed in construction engineering to make a porous medium water-tight. It can be used alone or with some other grouting material.
It acts as a Pigments and colours developer for carbonless copying paper and adsorption of impurities in white water system in paper manufacturing plants. In the process of printing, some inks do not dry rapidly and cause blotting. A common cure for this problem is starch, held in suspension by a thin hectorite or white bentonite suspension.
Bentonite is crucial to paper making, where it is used in pitch control (i.e. absorption of wood resins that tend to obstruct the machines), to improve the efficiency of the conversion of pulp into paper, and to improve the quality of the paper. Bentonite also offers useful de-inking properties for paper recycling. In addition, acid activated bentonite is used as the active component in the manufacture of carbonless copy paper.
Bentonite is an ideal for natural cat litter. The characteristics of the materials are such that they have high absorption, instant strong clumping, natural odor control, safe, hygienic, low dust no waste materials.
Bentonite is widely accepted for the purpose of improving ground conductance in electrical earthing.
Bentonite is used as filler in pharmaceuticals and due to its absorption/adsorption functions, allows paste formation. Such applications include industrial protective creams, calamine lotion, wet compresses, and anti-irritants for eczema. In medicine, bentonite is used as an antidote in heavy metal poisoning. Personal care products such as mud packs, sunburn paint, baby and face powders, and face creams may all contain bentonite.
Laundry detergents and liquid hand cleansers/soaps rely on the inclusion of bentonite, in order to remove the impurities in solvents and to soften the fabrics.

Cements, ceramics plasters:- As a plasticizing agent.
Insecticides:- As a carrier.
Insulation:- As a binder.
Porcelain:- As a suspending agent.
Sewer pipes:- As a lubricant and sealant.
